Working with the Bar Association of Queensland's University Relations Committee, Merissa organised an evening with the JCU Law School and Students to discuss advocacy in law. A line up of nine local advocates engaged with the lawyers of the future, discussing justice, community, ethics and ambition.

International Women's Day 2016 - Be Bold for Change - MC for the Sky Foundation Luncheon
As MC, Merissa helped the Sky Foundation raise awareness and donations for the rebuilding of the Townsville Women's Centre. Guest speaker Erin Molan and local police, social workers and musicians entertained hundreds of people at Rydges, Townsville.
2016 - JCU Law Students' Society Law Ball Guest Speaker
Merissa delivered the speech to the James Cook University Law Students ball. As students in a regional centre, they were encouraged to aim high with international aspirations, and to invest locally with pro bono work supporting their communities

10 March 2016 - Brisbane - SOCLA - Makdessi & the Penalties Doctrine
Carter Newell Solicitors hosted a Society of Construction Law of Australia talk delivered by visiting London barristers: Marcus Taverner QC, Adam Constable QC, Robert Fenwick Elliott and Jennie Wild from Keating Chambers. This was particularly relevant after the Court of Appeal's decision in Grocon v Juniper. Merissa Martinez delivered the Vote of Thanks.
Drinks with the Chief Justice
On 19 November 2015, Paloma Chambers and the Women Lawyers Association of Queensland hosted drinks with The Right Honourable Chief Justice Catherine Holmes. This fundraising event helped support The Sky Foundation: the front line helping women and children affected by domestic violence in Townsville.
